Thermal Response of Liver Mitochondrial Membranes of the Heterothermic Bat
نویسنده
چکیده
Al~tract--l. The thermal responses of liver mitochondrial membranes of heterothermic bats (M. schreibersii) during summer and winter were compared with those of normothermic laboratory mice (Mus rausculus ). 2. Bat mitochondrial membranes showed a constant Arrhenius Ea for succinate oxidase and succinate:cytochrome c reductase and no change in the temperature coefficient of the order parameter of spin label over the temperature range 7-40:C. For the mouse these enzymes showed an increase in E, below about 24~C and a change in molecular ordering at the same temperature.

Hibernation is one type of torpor, a hypometabolic state in heterothermic mammals, which can be used as an energy-conservation strategy in response to harsh environments, e.g. limited food resource. The liver, in particular, plays a crucial role in adaptive metabolic adjustment during hibernation. Studies on ground squirrels and bears reveal that many genes involved in metabolism are differenti...

Introduction: Recent studies have shown the presence of Cl- channels in heart and liver mitochondrial membranes. In this work, we have characterized the functional profile of a Cl- channel from rat brain mitochondria. Methods: After removing and homogenizing the rat brain, the supernatant was separately centrifuged in MSEdigitonin, H2O and Na2CO3 and mitochondrial inner membrane vesicles wer...
متن کاملSex differences in the thermoregulation and evaporative water loss of a heterothermic bat, Lasiurus cinereus, during its spring migration.
This study quantifies sex differences in thermoregulation and water loss of a small (20-35 g) insectivorous heterothermic mammal, the hoary bat Lasiurus cinereus, during its spring migration. We measured body temperature, metabolic rate and evaporative water loss, and calculated wet thermal conductance, for bats exposed to air temperatures ranging from 0 to 40 degrees C for periods of 2-5 h. Pr...
متن کاملEffects of reproductive condition, roost microclimate, and weather patterns on summer torpor use by a vespertilionid bat
A growing number of mammal species are recognized as heterothermic, capable of maintaining a high-core body temperature or entering a state of metabolic suppression known as torpor. Small mammals can achieve large energetic savings when torpid, but they are also subject to ecological costs. Studying torpor use in an ecological and physiological context can help elucidate relative costs and bene...
